Fiery Finish

Tonight is my penultimate appearance with the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra. It's a fantastic concert, featuring Quinn Patrick Ankrum singing Mahler's "Songs of a Wayfarer" and then Mahler's Symphony No. 1. It's a great way to end the season, and my very short tenure with the LSO.

I've loved Mahler's first symphony ever since  I heard it, and yet somehow this is the first time I've every performed it! It's so wonderful to play for the first time a piece I know so intimately. And Mark Morton (who I just discovered has a Wikipedia page!), of course, sounds amazing on the double bass solo at the opening of the third movement. What a treat.

The LSO gives each concert a name. This weekend's is Fiery Finish. It's true-- a good, fiery way for me to say goodbye to a wonderfully diverse and surprisingly musical community. It's been a great year sitting principal among colleagues and students and friends. It is bittersweet to go.

Happy practicing.
