All of last week I was rehearsing and performing with the Lubbock Symphony. It was a demanding program, including Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances (which I LOVE!) and Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini, which featured pianist Conrad Tao. He was simply amazing. He's only 18, but clearly will have a huge career if he continues along his current path. Quite incredible. After the Rhapsody, he played Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 6 as an encore, and it was so great! He was head-banging and dancing all over the keyboard. It was a delight to watch and hear. I wish Rachmaninov's Rhapsody weren't as demanding of the orchestra so I could have paid better attention to his playing!
After the concert last night, a fellow musician commented, "and we get paid for this too?!" and I couldn't help but smile, because it really was an amazingly rewarding musical experience, PLUS a paycheck! There's nothing quite like having a job you truly love.
