A question of fingering.

I had a perfectly lovely Sunday. A few good practice sessions convinced me to program the Reger Suite about which I was unsure yesterday. It'll be a lot of work, but I'm excited about the challenge. The second movement is especially tricky.

The opening measure presents a B-flat/D third, then a G/B-flat third, going back to the B-flat/D. Originally I fingered it as shown below:

But it was  difficult for me to jump between first and third position with the 1/3 fingering, and get all the notes in tune. Today I played around with another fingering, and it seems to work better:

So now I'm starting in third position, going in to fourth (on the D and G strings) for the second double stop, then back to third position for the repeated B-flat/D. It's a little less jumping around for the left hand. I'll need to play around with this more, but think it'll be a positive change.

I also made headway with the Schulhoff today. I'm so excited to perform this fun trio with Mark Morton and Susanna Self.

It's been a long time since I've really looked forward to an upcoming performance. What a wonderful change! They can be so stressful, you see, but something about this recital is different. Perhaps I'll be able to articulate it better as I explore that thought...

Until then, happy practicing!
