I just got done practicing and was shocked to see it's already 10:30 PM! Learning music is such a different task than perfecting music you already know-- it's amazing how much faster time goes by when I am learning a new piece. I have been thinking much about what to program on my upcoming recital, and after a delightful evening of picking apart music that I am definitely playing (Schulhoff Concertino for flute, viola, and bass) and music that I'd one day like to play well (Reger Solo Suite No 1 in g minor), I'm feeling more positive about adding the Reger to my recital. It's easy to program pieces you've played in the past, especially when there isn't a lot of time to prepare, but I think challenging myself to a program with more new (for me) music will be really rewarding.
I'll go in to the nitty gritty of the Reger and Schulhoff tomorrow, and see how I feel at the end of the day. Stay tuned! I am constantly amazed by how different each day of my musical life can be. What a fun and rewarding (and challenging and exhausting and frustrating at times!) profession!
